Turkey and Black Bean Chili

Nothing says fall like a nice bowl of chili—and this chili is awesome! Like any chili you can customize to your wants adding more or less. No two chili dishes are alike– Nate and I like ours smooth, not runny and not too spicy. We also keep it healthy by using lean ground turkey and black beans.

Turkey and Black Bean Chili

Ingredients

1/2 pound ground turkey

Dales seasoning sauce or other seasoning

2 Tablespoons onion flakes (or 1/2 chopped onion)

1 cup diced tomatoes (I used the ones I canned fresh from the garden a few weeks ago—so good!)

1 15 oz can tomato sauce

1 Tablespoon chili powder (or more to taste)

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon garlic

1/2 teaspoon salt

Ground black pepper to taste

1 can black beans

Cheddar cheese and sour cream for topping.

Directions

Brown ground turkey with Dales sauce and onion flakes until thoroughly browned. Drain grease. Add tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add spices and soda. Taste. Add more heat with chili powder or flakes if you need it. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes to fuse flavors. Add black beans and return heat to medium until beans are cooked through, approximately 8 minutes. Top with cheddar cheese and sour cream. Serve hot with biscuits!

    1. Yes! Generally the sugar helps to balace the acidity in the tomato products–the pop does the same type of thing, plus it just adds a little extra bit of something. Some peopele also add beer which is where I got the idea to add soda.
