Each of us is unique. Special. We all have things we are awesome at, and frankly, things we suck at. One of the biggest lessons I have learned about being a happy and productive person is to live in my strengths and accept my weaknesses. Like the team of Avengers no one is perfect and no one can solve all the world’s problems own their own. It takes each person acting on their unique strengths and being willing to work together to save the universe and all that jazz (or at least get dinner on the table and keep the kiddo alive)!
In celebration of the new MARVEL’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie coming out this weekend Nate and I have been talking about what Avengers character we are most similar to and why. We’ve watched every MARVEL movie (many multiple times! ) and both TV shows, so we are definitely fans and can get into pretty deep discussions about who we are like and why.
Nate is probably most similar to Tony Stark aka Iron Man! Like Tony his strengths are:
- Carefree spirit
- Likes to know how and why things work
- Creative and creating
- Friendly and outgoing–knows a lot of people
These strengths mean that when it comes to fitness Nate loves to do things that are fun and high energy! He is more likely to play a game with a group then go for a solo run (actually just running to “nowhere with no purpose” is something he would never do!). His goals need to have room for him to be creative and have fun with whatever he is doing. One of his fitness weaknesses based on this would be a tendency to get excited and start a program and then fizzle out.
I am probably most similar to Bruce Banner aka The Hulk. Actually, I took two online quizzes and this is what they tell me. At first I was like, “No way! That’s not me! This computer is a LIAR and I want to throw it across the room!!!!…..Oh, wait”. Haha! But really, now I see some similar strengths:
- Fiercely loyal
- A deep thinker
- Likes to solve problems
- Introverted, tends to prefer to work alone
- Not afraid of conflict
- Likes to smash things.
That last one is up for debate! Actually, who doesn’t like to smash things? As this relates to fitness and health I am definitely a problem-solver and like to thoroughly research my approach. I also prefer to workout alone, and once I find something I like I tend to stick to it for a long time. This can also be a weakness because I get stuck in ruts easily and don’t push myself as often as I should.
Layla is most similar to Captain America. Sadly, we couldn’t find a certified Avengers outfit for her in her size so we went with a Captain America themed outfit. But she does share some of his strengths like:
- Loving and friendly
- Polite–please and thank you were some of her first words!
- Confident in her abilities
As her little personality develops Layla is definitely brave, sweet, and friendly. All-American traits if you ask me! I can see her being more of a team player wanting to do things with her friends and probably wanting to engage in the most dangerous adventures around (which will surely give her mama a heart attack!).
Knowing my family members’ strengths help me to know that I don’t have to do it all! Like the Avengers it takes a team to make our family strong and we all have a different part to play. We all benefit by giving each other space to use our unique strengths.
And while we may not be chasing after villains supernatural or otherwise, we can create opportunities for courage, curiosity, and adventure in our every day life! A family bike ride can become an opportunity to practice skillfully using our bodies, courageously crossing streets, and discovering new wildlife. We can challenge our tastebuds with new-to-us foods! We can hike, climb, create, invent, and live adventurously! Choosing to be brave and intentional about putting ourselves in new and challenging situations is a daring life!
We picked up our sweet Avengers gear at our local Wal-Mart! We also spotted lots of other Avengers goodies like Yogurt, Dr. Pepper, Kellog Fruit Snacks and Cheez-Its! I whipped up this quick and easy snack mix so we can refuel like superheros after our next family adventure!
- 4 cups Avengers Cheese Its
- 2 cups unsalted Peanuts
- 4 cups lightly salted, air-popped Popcorn
- 2 cups Raisins
- Mix together in large bowl. Enjoy together or divide into ½ cup servings and place in ziploc bag for an on-the-go snack!
